NBA x DAYLIGHT

It’s that time of the year again where we try to make connections between sports & cannabis so that we can justify watching the games at the shop.

So without further ado…

The NBA finals are on and things are cooking up. It’s a tied series between an even match-up of two storied franchises.

On one side, we have the Boston Celtics. Statistically the underdogs, the Celtics haven’t taken home a playoff win since 2008. The Celtics are backed by a home-grown core of young talent (Jayson Tatum, Marcus Smart (DPOY) and Jaylen Brown, to name a few) that are hungry for their first NBA championship as a squad.

On the other side of the court, we’ve got the Golden State Warriors. Having made it to 5 consecutive NBA Finals (2015-2019) and taking home 3 of those titles, the Warriors are no stranger to NBA Finals glory. But between Kevin Durant’s 2019 achilles blow-out, his subsequent trade, and a series of injuries to other key teammates, the last few finals have been a rocky go for the Warriors. Now, some new faces on the bench have brought the team back to full-strength, and the Warriors are ready to claim the NBA title once again.

In 2021, the NBA announced that it would no longer perform random drug tests for cannabis. While performance-enhancing drugs & “drugs of abuse” (ie. opioids and methamphetamines) will still be hard-no’s for the league, the decriminalization/legalization of cannabis in Canada & (some of) the States has effectively made the NBA somewhat pro-Daylight.

Aside from that institutional change, we’ve also seen some support over the years from notable players. Most recently, Kevin Durant announced his multi-year partnership with Weedmaps in the hopes of “destigmatizing cannabis and showcasing its potential value for athlete wellness and recovery”.

Plus, JR Smith always looked high AF on the court.

So in the spirit of the NBA Finals, we brought two exclusive basketball-related strains into our stock:

GP20 & GELATO #33

GP20 (Y-Griega X Snowman)

Heavy-hitting indica from boutique, Californian-origin grower. GP20 is named after 9x NBA all-star, Gary Payton, who wore #20. Canadian regulations mean that the strain couldn’t outright use his name, but we see you Payton. The legend also has a son, Gary Payton II, who plays for - you guessed it - the Golden State Warriors.

Available in 3.5G flower and single 1G pre-rolls.

Gelato #33 (Sunset Sherbet x Thin Mint GSC)

Indica-dominant hybrid with cerebral, sativa-like effects. Certified staff favourite. Again, due to naming regulations, this unofficial strain name is more of an IYKYK situation. Gelato #33 is known throughout the cannabis industry as “Larry Bird”, the notorious Celtics great who donned #33.

Available in 3.5G flower - pre-rolls coming soon.

While we’re here, why not plug one more sports-related strain?

This week, we also brought in TKO from Mike Tyson’s weed company, Tyson 2.0. Coming it 34.6%, this strain is almost as hard-hitting as the man himself. A cross of Triangle Kush X GMO, this indica-dominant hybrid brings an immaculate bud structure and very high calyx-to-leaf ratio. Available in 7.0g flower.

Stay tuned for a new Hoodie Mellow colour drop…
